Leaving her to my brother’s care proved to be a challenge, but I was relieved when the call came in two days later from Yuri that Adam found a hit. He sent over everything he could and now I was lucky enough to hold every piece of evidence of Shade Carranza’s existence in my hands.

And the confirmation that he was, in fact, the boss of the Desalmados.

He was the same age as Yuri but that seemed to be the only thing, he had in common with any one of us. Adam tracked his birth back to Finland in a small town where his mother lived. She was a single mom and the two were inseparable—no other siblings or family on record. The records showed that he attended school in that small town until the age of nine when he and his mother up and moved across the world to Mexico.

I picked through the papers, leafing through print-faded photos of Shade’s school pictures and his mother’s driver’s license photos. Bank statements were short on supply and most of them showed their struggle, moving from place to place along the east coast until his mother found a solid position as a secretary at a big financial corporation. According to records, they thrived after that. She was able to finance a home and he stayed in the same school all throughout middle school. They put down roots in Oaxaca.

My brows shot up when I found the next picture. Shade was a little older—gangly and all limbs. His mother had her arms slung across his shoulders with a goofy grin, but it was the man that kept a firm hand on her shoulder that drew my attention. A tough, stubble-covered jaw, scraggly hair, and a silk suit bled through the terrible quality of the photo and my lips twitched.

“Uh oh, mommy’s new boyfriend?” I turned it over and looked at the writing. Shade, Leia, & Jo. I set the photo by itself above the rest of the papers on my dining table. I’d be referring back to that one soon, my gut told me.

Shade entered high school and from the transcripts Adam found, he was a solid student. But the record of his grades was half as long as the record of behavior and it seemed that Shade took a turn. He was no longer his mother’s little angel and then I found another paper that surprised me.

“Damn,” I mumbled. I read the bill for a private military academy in Texas and almost felt the sting Shade would have felt when his mom broke the news. She paid to send him away the summer before his sophomore year. On the bottom of the page was her signature, but it wasn’t alone.

There was a tight signature below it, sitting happily above the label of spouse.

There were no other papers in my stack. Whatever had happened there, changed the course of his life going forward. I needed to find out, but I wasn’t going to be able to do that with the measly stack of papers on my table.
